PORTLAND, Maine – A group of anti-alcohol crusaders is attempting a comeback in the first state to adopt Prohibition.
The Woman’s Christian Temperance Union is overhauling its Maine headquarters in Portland. And the group is looking to remain relevant in an age when voters recently made Portland the first city on the East Coast to legalize recreational marijuana.
The new Portland chapter president, Janet Perkins, says the group is interested in branching out into new areas such as human trafficking while retaining a focus on abstinence from drugs and alcohol.
But there won’t be any return to the tactics from the old days, when women terrorized saloon owners.
