TRENTON, N.J. – A New Jersey woman found to have neglected her child after leaving her 19-month-old in a car while she went shopping will get another chance to argue her case.
The state Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the woman, identified only by her initials, will have her appeal heard by a judge.
The ruling reverses an appeals court decision that said the woman’s actions constituted gross neglect and another hearing wasn’t warranted.
The woman left her sleeping child in a locked car with the engine running and the windows slightly opened while she shopped in a South Plainfield store for about five or 10 minutes in 2009.
The Division of Child Protection and Permanency filed a complaint against the woman and her husband seeking care and supervision of their four children.
