NOUAKCHOTT, Mauritania – Mauritania’s state prosecutor says a criminal court has sentenced a suspected senior Al Qaeda leader to 20 years in prison for “terrorist” activities.
State prosecutor Ahmed Baba said Tuesday that Younis al-Mauritani was sentenced on Monday and will serve his sentence in Nouakchott’s central prison.
Al-Mauritani was believed to have been tasked by Osama bin Laden with targeting American economic interests around the globe. He was arrested in Quetta, Pakistan in 2011 by Pakistani agents working with the CIA. In 2013, he was flown by U.S. authorities from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan and handed over to Mauritanian security forces.
